First of all, the Compaq mini I got from Amazon had clearly been used before - the panel covering the RAM was loose and the screws were worn from being unscrewed. There were also some slight scratches all over the base of the computer. I think it was a reconditioned model. I doubt this was Amazon's fault but it makes me wary of ever buying from Compaq again. I am currently in the process of getting a refund from Amazon.
The machine itself is quite nice - the screen is large and crisp and the keyboard is a beauty. However, the fan is REALLY noisy and is constantly on, which drains the battery faster. I've read that you can modify the BIOS to stop the fan from being on constantly, but I don't think that's an acceptable solution (plus this method apparently causes issues with the sleep operation of the computer).
Also, the trackpad is terrible. It's made from the same, high-friction material as the rest of the chassis so it's really slow to navigate your way around Windows using it. Half the time it wouldn't register my swipes either, especially when I tried scrolling using up/down movements on the far right-hand side.
Having read several excellent reviews for this computer, I was expecting a far better machine than what I received. What I got was a very noisy netbook with poor battery life, a nearly unusable trackpad and to top it all off, it was damaged from having been previously owned.
1 out of 5. | | A really cool product BUT cries out for Windows7 (& more memory): Rating: 4/5 |
| Bought the 311c on offer at Amazon UK. Great bargain/value. Very ergonomic keyboard. Nicely spaced keys for a netbook. Superb screen. Came with XP Home though. Tried it for a couple of days. Nearly tore my hair out. Very unresponsive in XP guise. Had to chuck XP for Windows 7 and opted for the memory upgrade to 3GB. The unit is rocking since! And all this fuss/hassle because i'm very "picky" but it was worth every penny and time spent in doing so! It's my job @techsofter | | A netbook that simply does the job: Rating: 4/5 |
I bought a Compaq Mini 311c from Amazon last month and have been very pleased with it, by and large. It replaced a larger standard 15.4" laptop that was just a little too awkward to use on one's lap.
I opted for the Compaq because of it's 720p screen and that screen is bright and clear.
The keyboard has slightly concave keys which are comfortable to use.
Battery life with wi-fi on has been a steady 5 1/2 hours.
Speed of operation is quick, perfectly adequate for browsing the Net and the like.
The trackpad has proved annoying at times. It's far too easy to touch accidentally with the result that when you're typing the cursor moves to some other area of the screen and you type in the wrong place. The trackpad buttons are okay but don't feel quality. I have them set to single click activation, a quick tick box in Windows itself.
Buyers should note that although it comes with 1GB RAM it uses shared graphics so there is only around 750MB available for Windows. I opted for the extra 2GB stick. It lessens the amount of disk-thrashing XP needs as it moves data in and out of the swapfile. I've had to return that stick because it packed in after ten days (unusual with Corsair who are normally reliable) and the replacement is behaving so far.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a better quality netbook. It can be lifted by one corner easily and isn't a bother to carry around. | | Lovely screen, but overall a compromise: Rating: 3/5 |
I bought this model for storing and editing digital photographs on because of the nvidia graphics card, and larger than normal screen for a netbook. It is great for this purpose, and the screen is impressively crisp, bright, and detailed. However, for general computing this netbook seems underpowered and struggles on processor-intensive tasks. The touchpad is frustrating as the cursor regularly leaps randomly across the screen, and the pad often fails to respond to tapping. Battery life is around 3 to 4 hours of moderate use. When you add in the extra cost of an external DVD player and a desirable memory upgrade, the total cost approaches that of an HP Pavilion dm1-1020sa laptop with the same size HD screen, but a Celeron processor, 3 GB memory and a 250 GB hard drive. If I was buying again I would go for the laptop.
PROS: Excellent screen
CONS: The size and weight of a small laptop but without the power | | Poor quality item.: Rating: 1/5 |
Bought as its the only Netbook with DDR3 however the unit does not appear to be new:
1. There are scuffs on the base.
2. Some rubber mounts were loose (not stuck properly to the chassis).
3. Speaker grill on the front was not a flush finish with the rest of the body.
Not worth trying again through Amazon as this could a Compaq problem, back to Dell it is then.
Some other notes:
1. Odd keyboard.
2. Glossy display.
3. Touchpad buttons are very hard for everyday use.
4. There is an extra slot inside the unit for more expansion, not sure what it is for but might be a 3G modem (its the same width as the Bluetooth card and twice the length) | |
