The Apple Remote has for years been something of a loyal companion - I use it to give presentations in Uni each semester, and of course they're fantastic for controlling your media from a Mac. Apples latest edition ditches the white plastic in favour of new unibody design; that meaning its been carved from a single piece of alluminum. You wouldn't think for something of this size it would make a difference, but it actually does.
One of the problems with the old remote was that they weren't very robust, and when you have it jangling around in a bag all day, its prone to damage. Plus, Apple have thankfully moved away significantly from their white-poly designs, which inevitably attract dirt and cracks.
This new remote feels better in the hand not just because of its 'all in one' manufacturing, but the extended length is much better for presentations. It actually not feels like you're gripping something confidently, and the concave buttons are nicer to press than the old protruding ones. What more can you say about a remote?
Well, it continues to be compatible with most of the software you'd expect - from Front Row, to iTunes to even Microsoft Powerpoint, which is a nice alternative to Keynote. The controls are logical, never had any problems in this department.
Of course, two factors still bug me:
1] The price that Apple have labelled this at. I would guess that these new alluminum productions cost more to manufacture than their previous generation counterparts (almost all plastic), so perhaps I'll let go a bit on this one,.
2] They've dropped the 'magnetic' support that would previously allow you to place your remote 'on' the Mac in question so you don't lose it. My guess here is that because everything they make now includes alluminum, they're must be some kind of conflict with the hardware.
In short however, I've had no trouble with this product and deem it to be one of the better Apple accessories out there. And at least it stands up to hustle of traveling in my bag! | | Currently the best Apple remote: Rating: 4/5 |
This kind of device used to come with iMacs as standard and was white and plastic. This version is essentially the same, but - in keeping with Apple's mission to manufacture everything in a basic uniform design - it now comes in anodised aluminium. The change is a step up. It's longer and narrower than its white predecessor, and feels about 200% sturdier and easier to hold. In fact, it's more than just easy to hold, it's great. The convex, seamless aluminium just seems to invite being touched; the only thing that's (strangely) missing is an engraved Apple logo.
The remote uses infrared technology. The title says it's for iPhone or iPod, but it'll only work with those devices via an attached dock or infrared receiver. It's more readily used with iMac, MacBook, Mac mini or Apple TV, all of which come with infrared receivers built-in. Some people prefer to use Apple's free Remote app on an iPhone or iPod touch, to navigate an Apple TV for example, but I find the app to be unwieldy and unduly draining on the device's battery. This remote uses a single CR 2032, which is good for months and months of use.
If you use an old plastic Apple remote a lot, it's worth upgrading to this one for the great feeling of the exterior and its improved durability. Until Apple comes up a dedicated, more complex remote (with a screen), this little device is the best Apple remote going, and the low price makes it well worth it. | | Very cool.... needs some software: Rating: 5/5 |
| Works well to control video playback software on my Macbook pro. Looks extremely cool (typical apple design). Could do with some extra software to improve the functionality of the controller... but that's just me being picky. | | Useless technology: Rating: 2/5 |
| Brilliant design but useless. To use front row to play your music you have to hard wire your speakers to your computer. Apple need to get their act together. I play my itunes via my airport express wirelessly to my hi-fi speakers but if I want to use this I cannot adjust the volume with it. It only adjust the volume on the laptop. Save your money. | | Good but could be better: Rating: 4/5 |
| Nice solid construction but could have more features, such as a click wheel for faster scrolling through music lists. | |
