I've had this netbook for 2 days now and i highly recommend it.
Let me get the little niggles out the way first....i was expecting the 11.6 " LCD LED screen to be more bright and colourful. Its definatelly a one-person-netbook because the screens tends to turn milky at angles...but...its nice enough...if the quality of screen is very important to you and you can spare more cash....then wait for oled netbooks to be released...otherwise, for the price, you can not get a better screen....especially with nvidia ion which enables 720p HD and possibly 1080p with some tweaking to the software and hardware.
The track pad is ok.its not 'iphone' responsive and scrolling is not so smooth. It does the job but i just purchased a microsoft arc portable mouse from here because i just dont like the limitation of these touch pads!
The keyboard is great. Its better than my toshiba qosmio keyboard and that is a serious piece of kit! The speakers are reasonable, but i think hp should place a volume control on side of the device.
Hdmi is a great addition but i have not tried connecting it to my tv. The wifi pick up is strong and the battery life varies with use from 4-6 hrs, which is good for me. I would guess that is average in todays netbook market but if battery life is very important to you then you might want to look at other options first e.g samsung. BUT......the price of the machine is amazing! All of this for less than £250 ! It is a bargain!
ps....dont let the fact that this netbook comes with windows xp put you off! Firstly, xp is the same as vista and windows 7 but without the glitter! I prefer xp but the good news is that you can upgrade the operating system because the hp mini 311 is fully capable of running vista and 7...(might need ram upgrade). | | Nice netbook :>: Rating: 4/5 |
| Nice netbook. Very fast graphics for its class owing to the Nvidia ION. Good battery life. Shame about the N270. Great for HD content thanks to ION's hardware decoding of 1080p content. | | compaq mini 311c: Rating: 4/5 |
very pleased with this netbook - it runs well, keyboard feel critisised in a review is actually good.
looks nice and well built. screen/graphics are good for netbook and makes a differance even just web browsing.
battery life is good as predicted.

I wanted to buy one of these when I read reviews about the HP Mini 311 when it was released in the USA. Also, it seemed certain that it would be released in the UK in November, just after Windows 7. Somehow, HP UK failed to get a version with Windows 7 loaded, and so I bit the bullet and bought the XP system and upgraded it myself.
The Mini 311 is great - just the right size to have a decent screen and keyboard, but still compact and light. The graphics seem very bright, clear and sharp. The battery seems to last well - indeed over the claimed 6 hours yesterday, and it runs cool, especially on battery. It has 3 USB ports, and a memory card reader, and an HDMI output (which I can't try since I don't have a TV).
I also upgraded the memory to 2 GB (from Crucial), to give the software a bit more space, and a slimline USB DVD. The upgrade to Windows 7 was reasonable - Microsoft have done a good job. Even though it is a reinstall, they do provide easy tools for keeping the data from XP. Once upgraded, I went to the HP support site and updated all the relevant drivers. I also installed Office 2003 - it works just fine. The HP Quicksync (syncables) software is very handy for keeping the netbook in line with my desktop documents etc...
Overall, I love it!

| This is a fine little machine, with a great screen, near full size keyboard, and DDR3 memory, upgradable to 3GB. I do have a couple of issues with the machine though. Firstly its my 2nd Mini 311, the 1st suffered from overheating, and continually switched itself off. The new machine has been fine so far, but it does run hot, compared to other netbooks that i've owned, and the cooling fan seems to be on most of the time. I was disappointed that such a new model wasn't shipped with Windows 7, as this Netbook could easily cope with it. The main reason for buying the Mini 311 was its HD capabilities, due to the Nvidea Ion graphics card. I have found the HD playback somewhat patchy so far, especially given that I have added 2GB of DDR3 memory. It plays 720p material with ease, but wouldn't play 1080p, which surprised me. I am however putting this down to the newness of the graphics card, and hope that its performance will improve with a few future driver updates. | |
