| Got this today and i really like it! Love the shiny effect on the surface and the photos don't do it justice! Its so simple to use, just plug it in and its instantly recognised as a hard drive. It works perfectly with my little netbook which is running windows 7 starter, No power or compatability issues! (Even windows vista didnt moan about it!) It operates almost silently and has a nice sturdy USB connection (Ive heard some people moan about the newer ones falling out) The data transfer speeds aren't so shabby either. (Just done 4GB in 2 mins) Nice little compact and efficent hard drive that ill be taking everywhere with me. This shall be my very own pocket library! Also just to add i downloaded the "samsung format utility" an formatted the drive from FAT32 to NFTS instead and found that with NFTS large files transfer to the drive quicker so i'd recommend this if you only intend to use the drive with windows OS, as NFTS is a more stable and efficient file system for large storage volumes. | | A little beauty of a drive, well priced and easy to use: Rating: 5/5 |
I bought this, the 640GB version in shiny red, and a beautiful little thing it is. It is truly shirt-pocket sized - my standard for "portability". But I bought it because it is very price competitive and has had generally favourable reviews. On these two points alone it is a winner. I like it.
On a Samsung NC20 netbook it is picked up and available quite easily, though under Windows XP it took 2 attempts at doing this, with Windows recognizing it and installing drivers then seemingly not completing the recognition. I had to disconnect, log off and on again, then reconnect for it to properly pick it up - but then many USB devices have similar problems under XP. It needs 2 USB connectors to be connected with a Y-cable in order to supply enough power from the NC20 for the drive to be stable.
It comes formatted as FAT32 - sensible for near universal compatibility with the various common operating systems. Since I will only be using it with Windows based systems I went to the Samsung website (not the UK general site, but the one dealing with hard disk drives) and found and downloaded the Samsung Format Utility software that allows one to re-format it to be NTFS, which gives far better capability for handling large file sizes and for file control. That re-format took a very long time - hours not minutes - so do it overnight or on a long afternoon.
